Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, the Minister of Environment and Energy Security, recently signed the Decree approving the regulations for the centralized electricity storage system. This marks the beginning of its operational phase, allowing Terna to start the storage auctions.
What does this practically mean? The procedure will enable the contracting of new storage systems to store energy during periods of high renewable production, particularly from photovoltaics and wind power, and release it during periods of higher consumption.
The first auction for electrochemical storage systems is set for the first half of 2025.
A significant new step forward towards an electricity market increasingly centered on the development and integration of renewable sources.
