Bess Storage News

A snapshot of Terna at 31 October shows that:

  • there are 707,758 storage systems in operation in Italy, with a total rated capacity of over 9.5 gigawatts. Of these, most are connected to the low-voltage grid;
  • connection applications received by Terna total 3,352 for more than 270 GW of power, of which the majority – 238 GW – stand-alone storage.

These significant numbers highlight the importance of equipping the electric system with new storage plants!

In this regard, Terna is working on the first auctions to acquire new storage capacity related to lithium-ion batteries, which are a crucial component in ensuring the growing integration of renewable energy. This energy can be stored through storage systems and released when it is most needed.

The go-ahead from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, which approved the rules of the procurement system, has initiated the process: the first auctions are set to take place by mid-2025, with the delivery year scheduled for 2028.
